Waihi Gold Safety Risk Assessment

Application of the RISQUE method to determine individual and societal safety.

Following the well-publicised sink hole that formed in mid-December 2001 under a Waihi residence, a technical working party identified the cause as underground voids left by the historic Martha underground mine and assessed that further subsidence features would be likely to form in subsequent decades. Hauraki District Council evacuated residential areas overlying the old workings, and asked Waihi Gold to assess the safety of its workers in the modern open cut Martha Mine that also sits above the old workings. Malcolm completed a worker safety risk assessment for the Waihi Gold Mining Company in support of its continued operation following ground subsidence and satisfied the Council that it did not need to close the mine for safety reasons.
