Favona Underground Mine Consenting

Consenting strategy delivering a large industrial project ahead of time and without an Appeal to the Environment Court.

With the successful grant of its resource consents in August 2004, Newmont Waihi Gold's Favona project saw the return of underground mining to Waihi after an hiatus of over half a century.

Malcolm devised the strategy, managed the technical supporting studies, and drafted the AEE that resulted in Newmont being able to start work on the Favona decline 12 months ahead of the original schedule.

The consents were granted without an Environment Court hearing, thus saving Newmont more time as well as the considerable cost associated with appeals.
